Career Trajectory
Bio
Noton has five years of experience as a Faculty in Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 2004, he obtained his Ph.D. from Jadavpur University, India, and did postdoctoral research at Seoul National University, South Korea and Tulane National Primate Research Center, USA. He completed his senior postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and joined the faculty in 2015. He also has two years of teaching experience as an Assistant Professor in Microbiology at the Institute of Genetic Engineering in India.
He worked on tuberculosis (TB) for 15 years in BSL-2/3 and ABSL-2/3/ facilities with a focus on animal (mice, guinea pigs and non-human primates) models of human TB, which have been used for host–pathogen interactions, preclinical (in silico, in vitro, ex-vivo) anti-tubercular drug development, vaccine studies and characterization of latent TB and its reactivation. He had also worked on a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Coronavirus DNA-based vaccine project for two years. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers in relevant topics on biomedical research and 3 book chapters.
He has three years of experience leading three NIH-funded grants related to examining the potential of host- and pathogen-directed adjunct therapies in TB as a Co-Investigator/Scientific Research Coordinator. As the Principal Investigator, he has successfully completed three different projects funded by the JHU Center for AIDS Research, JHU ICTR Nexus Biomarkers and Diagnostic award, and AIDS CLINICAL TRIALS GROUP supplement. These projects focused on identification of novel serum metabolites and miRNA biosignatures to diagnose TB and its response to treatment using a multidisciplinary high throughput approach, including the use of lipidomics, metabolomics, and miRNA sequencing. His research was funded by the US Civilian Research & Development Foundation distributed by CRDF Global.
He was an Associate Editor of Infectious Diseases in Frontiers in Microbiology, and a member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Antimicrobials, Resistance and Chemotherapy, American Journal of Microbiological Research, Journal of Tuberculosis, and Advances in Medicine. He has reviewed more than 122 articles in 17 different journals concerning Infectious Diseases and Microbiology. He is an ex-Board member of International Society of Non-Antibiotics (ISN), Denmark.
In September 2020, Noton devoted his career to NIH peer review when he joined NIAID as a Scientific Review Officer.
