Bio
Noel is a conservation ecologist and environmental scientist with expertise in northern, central and south-eastern Australian ecosystems, fauna, vegetation, fire, pests and a range of other interests.
Noel is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Tropical Ecosystems Sustainability Science, James Cook University; University Fellow at Charles Darwin Uni; Councillor (Treasurer) on the Ecosystem Science Council; and a former Director of Ecological Society of Australia.
Noel has an active interest in conservation of reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals which he has pursued throughout his life. He is passionate about investigating the causes of and responses to the dramatic and compelling losses of native fauna as a result of changes wrought over the past centuries, and the restoration of landscapes, many of which should never have been developed or utilised in ways which have brought about environmental deterioration. Noel has done many biodiversity surveys in central and northern Australia, including in north Queensland. With Don Franklin, he completed a conservation assessment of Eucalypts and Corymbia of the savanna region (http://www.kimberleytocape.net.au/eucalypts-of-northern-australia/).
Noel holds a PhD (CDU) on Indigenous Ecological Knowledge and Natural Resource Management, and worked with Miriwoong Gadjerong people in the Kimberley for part of his PhD. His MSc (UQ/NTU) was on ecology of desert fauna – reptiles and mammals. His first degree (BSc Macq) was on earth sciences and plant physiology. He has published extensively on his work.
With his wife Dr Penny van Oosterzee he was founder and Director of EcOz Environmental Services in Darwin from 1990 to 2008, and then Biome5 since 2006. He was Director of Discovery Ecotours from 1987 to 2000 in central and northern Australia. He has directed major environmental impact assessment projects for gas pipelines, subdivisions, biofuel plants, and run many smaller environmental projects in Qld, NT and WA. Noel has published over 200 scientific papers and technical reports, including a number of full EISs for major developments. He has a long involvement with indigenous enterprises, helping to set up the first Indigenous Protected Area, Paruku, in Western Australia, and with other Indigenous tourism, natural resource management (Yugul Mangi Women Rangers) and others. Noel spent 16 years as a field Ranger, Senior Ranger and Regional Manager for conservation departments in New South Wales and Northern Territory before starting his businesses in 1987.
Noel is a Chief Investigator on a JCU ARC Linkage project on accelerating species richness gains and carbon sequestration in secondary regrowth and the Thiaki ARC Linkage and Biodiversity Fund rainforest reforestation project (40,000 trees on 30 ha experimental plots) on their property in the Atherton tablelands and are currently managing the project and researching various aspects of the experiment. He has published scientific papers related to this work.
