Bio
Dr. Daphalapurkar's area of research is solid mechanics. He is a Scientist within the Theoretical Division (Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics group) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He has a doctorate in the field of solid mechanics from Oklahoma State University and a post-doctoratal fellowship in mechanics of materials from Johns Hopkins University. From 2012-17, he was an Assistant Research Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, where he contributed to undergraduate & graduate instruction and established a funded research program with financial support from U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency, U.S. Army Research Laboratory and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes.
Focus of his research is on development of models for advanced materials, incorporating mechanisms and microstructural data for predicting dynamic mechanical response under extreme environments. Simulations are performed using the particle-based material point method, mesh-based finite element methods, molecular dynamics, crystal plasticity, and concurrent atomistic-continuum methods. An aspect of his work involves developing efficient analytic tools and algorithms for unstructured data in two- and three-dimensions to perform analysis of high-fidelity computational data as applied to materials.
