4. Research & community engagement:
Conducted research on crop improvement and agronomic practices:
• Co-improved and released one carrot (Daucus carota L) variety and one garlic (Allium staiva L) variety (2014)
• Improved and released two high yielding potato (Solanum tuberosum) varieties named Gabbisa and Chala (2005)
• Improved and co-released two high-yielding sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) varieties named Adu and Barkume (2008).
• Motivated local and expatriate staff as well as farmers to form research and extension groups for participative research, technology generation, demonstration and validation of best practices for increasing agricultural production, as director of research as well as vice-president for research affair at Haramaya University (2008 up to now)
5. Community engagement
• Worked with farmers’ research groups extensively and disseminated a number of agricultural technologies for enhancing productivity of smallholder farmers in semi-arid regions.
• Organized and led farmers’ research and extension groups for participative technology
and knowledge generation, dissemination, demonstration, and validation in semi-arid regions.
• Organized and offered a series of training to farmers, development agents (DAs),
agricultural experts, and women farmers’ groups on crop production and soil fertility management.
• Organized training events, farmers’ field days, local, zonal, and regional visits, and conducted expert meetings for consultations and experience sharing on improved crop
production management, post-harvest management, soil fertility management, seed
systems, etc.
• I provided competent leadership in enhancing availability of quality seeds by working
with farmer seed producers’ cooperatives and networking seed value chains with a
number of partners.
