Dr. Nicholas Zill is a research psychologist who has studied the effects of economic and social trends on the functioning of families and the well-being of children and adolescents. Prior to his retirement in 2008, he was a Vice President at Westat, a social science research organization in the Washington area, and head of its Child and Family Study Area. He headed up the development of the Head Start Family and Child Education Survey (FACES) and the Head Start National Reporting System and made major contributions to the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-K).
Since his retirement, he has carried out studies for the Brookings Institution, the National Council on Adoption, and the Institute for Family Studies, based on secondary analysis of federal survey data. Several of his published studies and blog posts have received national press attention.
Dr. Zill is the co-author of several books, including Running in Place: How American Families Are Faring in A Changing Economy and An Individualistic Society (1994) and Who Reads Literature? The Future of the United States as a Nation of Readers (1990). He is also the author or co-author of widely cited journal articles and book chapters on the health status and school readiness of American children, adolescent time use, and the development and well-being of children from divorced families, stepfamilies, adoptive families, and welfare families. He has given invited expert testimony on these topics before several committees of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.
Before coming to Westat, Dr. Zill was the founder and for 13 years the Executive Director of Child Trends, a non-profit research organization that is known for its work on childhood social indicators.
