Bio
Dr Nick Simpson is the Senior Advisor and Knowledge & Practice Lead of the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (a partnership between the African Union Commission, the World Bank and the United Nations to address climate-forced migration and displacement in Africa and harness climate mobility for the continent’s collective resilience and development). He is a Lead Author of the Africa chapter of the 2022 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment Report, as well as an author on the 2023 IPCC Synthesis Report and the IPCC Summary for Urban Policy Makers. He is also research associate at the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town and an affiliate member of the African Association of Science.
His research focuses on climate change risk, response, and climate-resilient development pathways for Africa. Nick has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles, including the first continental-scale study of climate change literacy rates, climate risk to Africa’s coastal heritage, and the first adaptation feasibility assessment for Africa. His work on complex climate change risk has advanced our understanding of compound and cascading climate risk, including adaptation and mitigation response risk. It has also been adopted as the risk framework of the US Department of Energy’s research Vision 2030 and by the Government of Belgium’s National Security Cluster among others. His research has influenced fields as diverse as governance, city infrastructure planning, municipal finance, heritage, health, migration, climate risk perception, transitions, security, vulnerability assessment, feasibility assessment, environmental assessment, humanitarian and development practice, and disaster risk management.
Nick has also led multiple sustainability assessments across Africa, Central Asia and South America. His Design Principles for sustainable humanitarian and development work is currently in operation across 35 countries across the world. His recent work in this area is the development of principles for sustainability, helping non-State actors find their niche - as partnering actors - for climate justice and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
