Omar A. Niamut is a senior research scientist and a program manager at the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). He received MSc and PhD degrees from Delft University of Technology, in 2001 and 2006, respectively. In 2007, he advised and reported to the European Parliament and the European Commission on the harmonization of mobile TV, and was the technical lead for one of the world’s first user trials of social TV services. From 2008 to 2010, he made more than 300 standardization contributions to European Telecommunications Standards Institute Telecoms & Internet converged Services & Protocols for Advanced Networks and advised the Singapore government on the use of internet protocol television (IPTV) standards. From 2010 to 2016, he led the research on tiled streaming, culminating in the TNO spin-off Tiledmedia. He is a Steering Board Member for New European Media Initiative, an expert reviewer for the Innovatie door Wetenschap en Technologie funded iMinds ICON program, and author of several journals and conference papers in the fields of audio coding, interactive IPTV services, and immersive media. At TNO, he manages a scientific program on major information and communication technology topics, such as 5G, Big Data, Blockchain, and Media.
