Bio
NGUYEN Gia Minh Thao obtained the B. Eng. (honors) and M. Eng. (first class) degrees in Control Engineering from Vietnam National University–Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) in 2009 and 2011, respectively. He obtained a Dr. Eng. degree in Intelligent Control from Waseda University, Japan in 2015, with a scholarship from JICA – AUN/SEED-Net.
Dr. Thao has good experience and skills in teaching and research guidance of both undergraduate and graduate levels. From Apr. 2010 to Aug. 2012, he was a Lecturer in the Falcuty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, HCMUT, Vietnam. From Nov. 2015 to Aug. 2020, Dr. Thao was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Waseda University and Toyota Technological Institute, Japan. He was a designated Assistant Professor in Nagoya University, Japan, from Sep. 2020 to Mar. 2021. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Toyota Technological Institute, Japan.
His research interests and expertise include: Intelligent control (fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks), Nonlinear control, Impedance control, Hybrid control systems, Mobile robots, Motor drive systems & control, Modeling techniques, Computational intelligence & Machine learning (interval fuzzy model, convolution neural networks, deep convolutional autoencoder), EV, Power electronics, Electromagnetic characterization, High-frequency magnetics, Finite element analysis, Photovoltaic & wind power systems, Energy management and optimization. Dr. Thao has published more than 20 refereed journal articles, 40 refereed international conference papers (mostly sponsored by the IEEE), 1 book chapter in Springer Nature, 1 exclusive patent, and many domestic conference presentations in these research fields.
He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, Committee member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ), and member of Asian Control Association (ACA), Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), and Vietnamese Academic Network in Japan (VANJ). He is also a Co-Chairman and admin of Vietnam Power Electronics Community (VPEC). Dr. Thao received the "Best Paper Award" of ASEAN Symposium on Automatic Control 2011, "Excellent Paper Award" of the 2020 23rd IEEE International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems, and "Certificate of Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing" of International Journal of Hydrogen Energy in 2017.
He is currently an Associate Editor for the IEEE Industry Applications Society - Industrial Automation and Control Committee.
He is also an Associate Editor for IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS and IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, and a Guest Editor for ELECTRONICS and IET The Journal of Engineering. Besides, he is an experienced Reviewer for 7 refereed transactions/journals of the IEEE, 3 refereed journals of the IET, more than other 10 WoS refereed journals, and many IEEE-sponsored international conferences. Furthermore, he has served a Chair of special sessions in IEEE-sponsored international conferences: ICCE 2022, GCCE 2022 / 2021 / 2020, and VPPC 2019.
