During the last few years, we have described the mechanisms leading to gene expression in normal and dystrophic skeletal muscle cells. Our results suggest that interleukin-6 (IL-6) induces utrophin expression in mdx myotubes through activation of the Neuregulin-1 (NRG-1)/ErbBs receptor signaling pathway. This is the first study showing a functional relationship between IL-6 and NRG-1 as regulators of utrophin expression through activation of the NRG-1/ErbB signaling pathway in dystrophic cells.
Currently our research is based on the study of proteins synthesized and secreted by skeletal muscle (myokines, such as NRG) that have autocrine and endocrine action, which through signaling pathways regulate the expression of genes associated with metabolic homeostasis, both in skeletal muscle, liver and adipose tissue.
The laboratory is affiliated to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile.
