Bio
My role as director is to oversee fiscal and scientific operations for the Genomics Technology Core Facility. Since 2006, I have provided oversight in the acquisition and implementation of NGS technologies to be made available as a service to the University of Missouri system. Our facility’s current sequencing capabilities include small RNA analysis, transcriptome profiling (RNA-Seq), ChIP-Seq, whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) and genomic DNA analysis. My broad goals are to further develop methods and technologies that bring an array of genomic tools to the University of Missouri which are accessible to researchers.
Throughout my career I have been an active member in research groups organized by the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities members. The primary goal of these groups is to conduct studies of advance technologies and provide benchmarks for methods in analytical laboratories. Past participation has focused on fragment analysis and Sanger sequencing techniques. My most recent work involves membership in the Metagenomics Research Group which has the goal to assemble microbial standards in order to evaluate current developing metagenomic techniques. The Extreme Microbiome Project is also a current endeavor that is a scientific effort by a large scientific consortium to characterize and develop new pipelines and protocols for extremophiles.
Most recently, the Genomic Technology Core has partnered with a group of University of Missouri microbiologists, veterinarians and animal scientists to develop metagenomic strategies for delineating microbiomes from mammalian hosts, as well as from environmental niches. These projects will depend on both rRNA and whole genome sequences. My contribution has been in the development of these methods and adapting them to broader applications.
