个人简介
In poetry, literature, and even modern tweets, the space in between the lines is often as important as the actual text. Similarly, in between the lines of medicine and research, there is an important space that can not be ignored. This is a space where information generated from clinical medicine and research is exchanged to inform future science and treatment. It is a space for communication and application. Research that is not effectively communicated cannot serve its purpose. Whether the goal is to develop a new drug, elucidate a neurological pathway, or generate higher resolution MRI images, communication is essential to application. I want to work in this space to aid in enhancing the frameworks that foster communication between scientists, physicians, and policy makers to ultimately strive for a seamless integration of research, medicine, and policy.
For me to be successful in this endeavor, I believe that it is crucial to gain real experience as a physician, treating patients, and working in the healthcare system as well as a scientist, developing research questions, designing experiments, and producing meaningful science. I am dedicated to pursuing combined MD-PhD training, with which, my objective is to conduct clinical neuroscience and psychiatric research. Over the course of my undergraduate career at Tulane University and post-baccalaureate training at the National Institute of Mental Health I gained a specific interest in the brain, cognition, and mental illness, and wish to contribute to the development of treatments for currently untreatable neurological conditions through interdisciplinary studies. I believe integrating techniques from multiple research domains to study a common research question is critical to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying illness, enhance diagnosis, and strive for more effective personalized treatment. I am currently most keenly interested in the development of mental illness and the biological and environmental factors that contribute to neurological changes. More specifically, I am interested in studying how adversity and stress causes biological changes through epigenetics and alteration of neurological pathways in psychiatric illness.
I currently serve as a MD-PhD trainee in UT Houston’s Medical Scientist Training Program. The program provides me with unrivaled resources and opportunities necessary to develop my skills as a physician-scientist. Importantly, during my three years of formal training in medicine, I gained a passion for public policy through my interactions with the American Medical Association (AMA) and Texas Medical Association (TMA). Serving in various leadership roles in these organized medicine settings provided me with the crucial opportunity to interface with policy makers and the legislative process. Ultimately, effective public policy is crucial to the implementation of scientific advances in real world settings. As a future translational researcher, it is one of my major goals to effectively bridge science, medicine, and public policy to foster the greatest improvement to human health.
I have most recently started my PhD training in computational psychiatric research under the guidance of Dr. Jair Soares. My major aim is to combine advanced imaging techniques, epigenetics, and machine learning to conduct novel and clinically meaningful translational psychiatric research that will ultimately improve patient care.
