Bio
My long-term research goals are to improve sexual health and health care access disparities among underserved populations at high risk for and living with HIV using culturally-tailored prevention and linkage to care intervention strategies. My goals also include conducting research to better understand psychosocial contributors to sexual health, such as HIV stigma and stress reduction. My experience with HIV intervention research began as an undergraduate student at Ohio University, where I worked as a student research assistant on three studies focused on older PLWH. For my master of public health capstone project, I assessed the health impact of stress on parents with young children. As a graduate student at the University of Alabama, I assisted with coordinating the implementation of Project FAITHH (Faith-based Anti-Stigma Initiative Towards Healing HIV/AIDS), a rural faith community-engaged HIV education and stigma reduction intervention, in conjunction with the CDC. My doctoral work, which combined my interest in stress and HIV prevention, and focused on minority stress and condom use intentions among AA college students attending predominantly white institutions in Alabama – the first study of its kind with this population. At this time, my research productivity in the areas of sexual health and HIV stigma includes seven published articles and two manuscripts under review. Currently under Dr. Berkley-Patton’s advisement, I am preparing several manuscripts from her AA church-based studies that will be submitted this year (e.g., HIV testing decision making, sexual risk behaviors and receipt of STD testing, stress and sleep on health outcomes). Currently, I am the primary investigator of the studies- Religiously tailoring the Anti-Retroviral Treatment and Access to Services (ARTAS) strength-based case management program to improve linkage and retention in care among African American (AA) people living with HIV (PLWH); BlaqOut Vision 2020, and the co-investigator of the College Student Sexuality Study . Throughout my academic career, I have held a number of leadership positions including Senator of the College of Health Sciences at Ohio University, Vice President of Fiscal Affairs and Executive Vice President of the Graduate Student Association at the University of Alabama. In addition, I have mentored 25 students, provided 10 guest lectures, and given nine conference presentations. These experiences demonstrate my qualifications as a growing researcher and leader who focuses on testing culturally/religiously appropriate HIV/STD prevention and linkage to care interventions with underserved populations using community-engaged approaches.
