Her research focuses on the interrelationships between brain development, genetic factors, and cognitive, behavioral, and academic outcomes. Her current research includes the neuropsychological consequences of very preterm birth, development of executive functions, neurobehavioral phenotypes associated with autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders, and the longer term effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs. She also participates in clinical trials and multi-site follow-up studies of pediatric patients with genetic disorders and with early risk factors.
In her role as a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Akshoomoff is involved in training graduate students in the San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. She is also active in teaching undergraduate and graduate students, residents, fellows, and postdoctoral scholars at UC San Diego.
