Career Trajectory
Bio
BSc Mechanical Engineer (UdG-1995), MSc Mechanical Engineer (UPC-1998) and Doctor by Universitat de Girona (2005). Professor in the department Enginyeria Mecànica i de la Construcció Industrial, Universitat de Girona. My teaching activities are focused on courses on mechanics and machine design at bachelor level (Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering) and finite element modelling, design and analysis of composites with finite elements and non-destructive inspection of composite materials at master level (Master in Mechanics of Materials and Structures).
I started my research activities in 1998 when I joined UdG as a full-time lecturer and started my PhD. I have been an active member of the research group AMADE (Analysis and Advanced Materials for the Structural Design) since it was created, in 1999-2000. Since the last 7-8 years AMADE has been always ranked among the top 3 groups in UdG for scientific production, competitive research fund accounting and applied research contracts with private companies.
In 2005 I obtained my PhD with a thesis entitled ‘Variable mixed-mode delamination in composite laminates under fatigue conditions: testing & analysis’, which was the first work of the group related to delaminations in composite materials. Nowadays, the analysis, simulation and characterisation of composite delaminations is one of AMADE’s strengths. Part of the experimental work of the thesis was carried out at the Solid Mechanics Department of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, during two pre-doctoral research stays. The results of this work were published in the article ‘Mixed-mode delamination growth in carbon-fibre composite laminates under cycling loading’ (International Journal of Solids and Structures, 41(15), 4219-4235, doi: 10.1016/j.ijsolstr.2004.02.040, 125 citations), which was the first AMADE’s publication on composite materials.
After my PhD, my research activity has focused on the numerical modelling and experimental analysis of different aspects of composite materials with oriented reinforcement and polymeric matrix and more specifically on the analysis and modelling of damage associated to intra- and interlaminar fracture and damage tolerance and resistance in front of out-of-plane loading and Low Velocity Impact events. I have carried out two different 6-month post-doctoral research stays at Imperial College London and Universidade do Porto. As a result of my research activity I am co-author of 36 international scientific articles on the characterisation and modelling of composite materials for structural purposes, most of them in Q1 journals, with 1123 citations and an index H-19 (Scopus 17/01/2022). I am co-author of more than 55 papers in research-academic conferences. I have supervised 5 PhD theses already concluded, 3 of them with the highest mark and 4 international and I am now supervising 5 PhD theses. I have collaborated in 16 different research projects, both with public and private funding, of which I have supervised 6. I am co-author of 2 different international patents, one of which is under exploitation by an international aircraft manufacturer. Recently, I am focusing my research activity more on the characterisation and modelling of the interlaminar fracture toughness and out-of-plane and Low Velocity Impact response of additive manufacturing (3D printing) of composite materials and the effect of high-loading rates on the interlaminar properties of composite materials.
