Bio
NUNO LAPA is an Assistant Professor at NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT) of NOVA University Lisbon (UNL) since 2004.
Since January 2014, he is an Integrated Researcher (https://laqv.requimte.pt/people/34-nuno_lapa) of the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry - Clean Technologies and Processes (LAQV) of REQUIMTE research network (https://laqv.requimte.pt/). This research network is the largest Portuguese network in Chemistry & Chemical Engineering funded by the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology. Dr. LAPA develops is research activities within the “Materials for Adsorption and Catalysis Group” (MAC) of LAQV-REQUIMTE (http://sites.fct.unl.pt/mac/home).
Dr. LAPA got his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from UNL-FCT in the eco-compatibility studies of new materials for civil engineering works, based on the reuse of bottom ashes from Municipal Solid Waste incineration plants.
His Ph.D. was developed in the framework of the European project named VALOMAT which was developed in collaboration with several European Companies (Soletanche-Bachy; Inertec; SOLVAY; Sobry-Schancks) and funded by the European Commission (EC) under FP6.
Dr. LAPA works at the Department of Chemistry (DQ) and is responsible for different courses in the Master Programme of Bioenergy, Master Programme in Engineering of Renewable Energies, Doctoral Programme in Bioenergy, and Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Chemistry.
Between 2014 and 2021, he was an Associate Editor of the scientific journal entitled Waste Management (Elsevier) (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/waste-management) (2021 IF: 8.816; 2020 CiteScore: 13.5). In January 2022, he moved into de Editorial Board of this scientific journal.
Dr. LAPA is an External Expert of the Research Executive Agency (European Commission), European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (European Commission), and the Portuguese Agency for Innovation (ANI).
Currently, Dr. LAPA develops research activities on the following topics:
1. New strategies for the valorisation of organic and inorganic wastes as secondary raw materials towards a circular economy:
(i) Production of biochars and nanocarbon materials from organic biowastes.
(ii) Use of biochars and nanocarbon materials in wastewater treatment systems, recovery of metals, and industrial gas flow treatment systems.
2. Environmental risk assessment of new materials derived from wastes through chemical and ecotoxicity methods.
3. Optimization of biological processes for the valorisation of organic wastes:
(i) Enhancement of biogas and biomethane production through anaerobic digestion.
(ii) Optimization of biohydrogen production through dark fermentation.
4. Sustainability assessment of new products and processes (Life Cycle Assessment, Carbon Footprint, Water Footprint, and Ecological Footprint).
Dr. LAPA has an h-index of 23 with 1512 citations by 1319 documents and 150 co-authors (source: Scopus, on January 9, 2023).
