Bio
After her training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and board examinations at the University of Basel, she did postdoctoral fellowships in the field of transplant virology at Prof. Hans Hirsch Lab in Basel and subsequently in the field of T-cell immunology and T-cell therapy at the University Hospital of Würzburg in Prof. Einsele/Prof. Topps’ group. She has studied T-cell responses to JC virus and human pathogenic fungi and developed new protocols to rapidly isolate multi-pathogen specific T-cells.
In 2010, back at the University Hospital in Basel, she continued these studies in an own research group in the Infection Biology lab at the Department of Biomedicine and was supported from 2013 to 2016 through an Ambizione Score grant by the SNSF. During that time, she set up a clinical protocol for virus specific T-cell therapy for treatment refractory viral infections in patients after hematopoietic cell transplantation. Besides the focus in T-cell therapy she has a strong interest to improve anti-infective therapy i.e. in Staphylococcus aureus or epidermidis implant-associated infections. In 2018, her lab could publish a new innovative method using designer cells to combat MRSA infection. This paper was published in Cell. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83OhIKTwxTg).
In 2017 she was promoted to a senior physician at the University Hospital of Basel. Nina Khanna sets a strong priority in clinical management of patients with infectious diseases. In 2019 the University of Basel was elected for a National Competence Center to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by the Swiss National Foundation for which Prof. Nina Khanna is responsible for the clinical studies (executive board).
