His interests have been the practice of Clinical Microbiology as a complement to developing antimicrobial agents with validation of in vitro susceptibility testing methods. Many global antimicrobial resistance surveillance programs have been designed and implemented by Doctor Jones (currently associated with Tufts University School of Medicine), the most well-known being SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (1997 to date). Professor Jones has published extensively in this area, authoring nearly 1,700 peer-reviewed publications and much greater number of abstracts to international meetings.

He was the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease for over 25 years. Furthermore, the CLSI (formerly NCCLS) committees/subcommittees on Antimicrobial Susceptibility test methods have been chaired by Dr. Jones, and that organization presented him with their highest recognition (Eiler's Award). He currently is a fellow of the IDSA, CAP, ASCP and AAM; and is a reviewer/editorial board member for numerous international microbiology and infectious disease journals. Because of his dedication to his field and his impressive list of publications, Dr. Jones has long been considered one of the world's leading experts in antimicrobial development and infectious disease research.
