Bio
Dr. Nurul earned her Ph.D. in Food Science from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, USA, in 2015, under the supervision of Professor Emeritus Elliot Ryser and Prof. Dr. Bradley Marks. During her Ph.D. tenure, she has involved in a $4.8 million multi-institutional study including Institute for Food Safety and Health of FDA, Washington State University, University of Georgia, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Illinois Institute of Technology. The project was focusing on the use of a surrogate microorganism for validating thermal inactivation of Salmonella in low-moisture foods, as these products have been repeatedly implicated with major Salmonella outbreaks in the U.S. In 2017, she was awarded 1st place in the J. Mac Geopfert Developing Scientist Award Poster Competition at the Annual Meeting of the International Association of Food Protection (IAFP) in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She began her appointment as a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Food Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in January 2020. Later, she was appointed as a program coordinator for the Master of Food Safety and Quality Assurance program (2020-2022), interim research associate at Halal Products Research Institute, UPM and research associate at Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security, UPM. She is teaching food microbiology, international food law and regulation, undergraduate and graduate dissertation course.
She is a recipient of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) fellowship for postdoctoral training at the Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Pennsylvania, USA. ERRC is one of in-house research facilities for USDA. ERRC is developing cutting-edge methodologies and technologies to provide solution for on-going food safety threats, ventured by world experts in agri-food research. Nurul is working with Dr. Lihan Huang, who is the developer of user-friendly predictive modeling software (IPMP 2013, IPMP Global Fit). Her work currently focuses on developing advanced approach to predict growth and survival of foodborne pathogens in processed meat and egg products.
