Nuno Empadinhas graduated in Biology and received a PhD in Biochemistry (specialty in Microbiology) from the University of Coimbra (UC). He is Principal Investigator and Group Leader at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) and at the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) of the UC. His research in Microbial Physiology has been focused on molecular mechanisms of adaptation to stress in microbes from extreme environments and mycobacterial pathogens. He elucidated biosynthetic pathways for compatible solutes (glycosides) in hyper/thermophilic archaea and bacteria, and for polymethylated lipid-transfer polysaccharides (PMPS) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). He organized field research expeditions, and isolated microbes from hotsprings and mycobacteria from natural springs and water distribution systems. His group's research interests also include the Parkinson's gut microbiome, biosynthesis of microbial neurotoxins, and the threat posed by opportunistic NTM in water distribution systems. In his career as a molecular microbiologist, he identified genes and enzyme activities that were the founding members of 17 new enzyme families at the IUBMB Nomenclature (https://www.enzyme-database.org/query.php?name=Empadinhas). Supervisor or co-supervisor of 10 PhD, 12 MSc students, 4 post-doctoral fellows; invited speaker at >30 conferences, co-inventor in 2 international patents, published 5 book chapters and 67 papers in Journals such as J Biol Chem, J Bacteriol, Mol Microbiol, Nat Prod Rep, mBio, Commun Biol, PNAS, Gut. He was awarded the Mizutani Grant in 2012, the only time attributed to a scientist in Portugal since its foundation in 1993. In the last 10 years, he coordinated or co-coordinated 10 projects with a global budget of >2 M euro funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, Infarmed, Cure Parkinson's (UK), Mizutani Foundation for Glycoscience (Japan), and participated in several others including 3 funded by the European Commission.
