Bio
Prof. Neil Fox (NF) is a Professor of Materials for Energy in the School of Chemistry and the School of Physics. He is a research leader in the wide bandgap semiconductors where he undertakes research into the use of isotopically pure, synthetic diamond and 2D materials for applications in energy conversion, energy storage, and radiation detection. He has spent the past several years leading the growth and integration of wide bandgap semiconductors for nuclear batteries application such as ASPIRE: Advanced Self-Powered sensor units in Intense Radiation Environments (EP/P017436/1, £875k), NNUF-ANM-National Nuclear User Facility for Active Nano Mapping (EP/T011483/1, £1M), EPSRC NanoESCA (EP/K035746/1, £1.7M), Beta-enhanced thermionic energy converters and nuclear batteries employing nanostructured diamond electrodes (EP/K030302/1, £952k).
Prof. Fox is the Director of Bristol NanoESCA facility—a state-of-the-art platform, unique in the UK, used to perform surface science studies on a wide range of materials for energy using three main characterisation techniques: XPS, SPA-LEED, and Energy-filtered PEEM/micro-ARPES.
