个人简介
I am an econometrician with a wide range of research interests that include microeconometric modelling, health informatics, health economic modelling, mathematical statistics and computer algebra. I am very much interested in the development of statistical methodology for the modelling of variables associated with health and health-related behaviours, involving especially the use of dependence structures encapsulated by copulas of statistical distributions. My recent research has focussed on the quality of use of pharmaceutical medicines with, for example, one project in the area of acute pre-hospital trauma pain and a variety of others spanning several chronic disease settings. Influential in developing the expertise necessary to take on these projects was my time spent as a student at Monash University (Australia) where, in 1983, I gained a first class honours degree in Economics majoring in econometrics and operations research and then, in 1987, my PhD, having studied aspects of exact finite-sample econometric theory under the supervision of Grant Hillier.
My first academic appointment was as a lecturer in the School of Economics at the University of New South Wales, and my second, spanning almost 20 years of service, was at the University of Sydney where I rose to the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics. I then moved from Australia to the UK where I held the posts of Senior Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen in their Health Economics Research Unit from 2007-9, and Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham in their School of Pharmacy from 2010-16. Concurrent with the latter, from September 2010 I served on the NICE Technology Appraisal Committee where I was involved in decisions over adoption of medicines into the NHS in England and Wales. From April 2016 up to October 2022 I worked in the Community and Health Research Unit at the University of Lincoln as a Senior Research Fellow in Econometrics and Health Economics, with seconding for one day per week to the NIHR East Midlands Research Design Service for 3 years from September 2016 to September 2019. I also served on the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit East of England Regional Advisory Panel from August 2018 to August 2022. In November 2022 I moved from England to Wales to join Aberystwyth University as Professor of Rural Health Economics in the Aberystwyth Business School.
I have held a number of visiting research positions including: the University of East Anglia in 1993 where I was a Leverhulme Trust visiting research fellow in the Department of Economics; the University of Munich (Institute for Statistics) in 1998-9; the University of Dortmund (Institute for Economics and Social Statistics) in 2001; the University of York (Department of Economics) in 2006. My visits to Germany were made possible through sponsorship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
