Bio
Khan Muhammad is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Mining Engineering, Faculty of Civil Agriculture and Mining Engineering, University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar, Pakistan. He specialises in ore reserve estimation, mineral economics, remote sensing, short- and long-range mine planning, and artificial intelligence in mining problems. He received his PhD in Mining Engineering from the Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter, UK.
He earned a scholarship for his PhD in 2005 and presented Fuzzy-logic based spatial estimation techniques as an alternative to the classical geostatistical methods in his Thesis. The methods were intuitive, free from rigid statistical assumptions, and could incorporate data from multiple sources. Khan has been working as Assistant Professor at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar, Pakistan since 2009. He taught several courses related to Ore Reserve Estimation and worked as a consultant, primarily on ore reserve estimation of Copper and Coal resources.
Khan is heading the Intelligent Information Processing Lab in UET Peshawar since Feb 2019 as part of the PKR 1 Billion project "National Centre of Artificial Intelligence", i.e., a consortium of 9 Labs among 6 Universities across Pakistan. He has been involved in developing AI-based solutions through remote sensing, resource modelling, production planning, and online quality monitoring through IoT. Khan teaches courses and advising students on mine planning, mineral resource modelling, online quality monitoring. He has completed several sponsored research and industry projects in these fields for various government organisations and mining companies in Pakistan, including the most significant public sector Copper Company, Mineral Exploration and Development Organization (MEDO) and Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC).
Khan is a member of the International Associate of Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME), Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IoM3) and has served as a reviewer for quality journals.
