Bio
Dr. Latif is head of Biochemical Lab at Centre for Genetics and Inherited Diseases (CGID), Taibah University, KSA. Before joining the CGID, he was working as Post-Doctoral Fellow at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)-South Korea. He investigated the Riboswitches that are regulatory segment of a messenger RNA molecule that binds a small molecule, resulting in a change in production of the proteins encoded by the mRNA. He also explored the development of heterocyclic molecules for ALK inhibition. In his recent career, Dr. Latif also worked on using LC-MS/MS, GC/MS, HPLC, FTIR and UV based technologies. His current research interests involve the application of Ion Exchange Chromatography and Tandem Mass Spectrometry to the study inherited metabolic disorders, identification of disease associated biomarkers, medicinal chemistry and cancer drug discovery, designing and synthesis of potent novel organic molecular entities, development of synthetic methodologies for novel organic molecules, total synthesis of natural products, asymmetric organic synthesis, and solution phase peptide chemistry.
Dr. Latif received his M.Sc. and M. Phil degrees in organic chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) Islamabad, Pakistan in 2000 and 2002, respectively. From 2003 to 2010, he offered his services as Assistant Professor of medicinal chemistry at Hamdard University, Pakistan. He remained incharge examinations, member of board of studies, and an active member of several other committees during his stay at Hamdard university, Pakistan. Before his Ph.D. research, he worked as researcher at Micro/Nano Biosystems laboratory department of chemical and biological engineering, Chungnam National University (CNU), South Korea and investigated synthesis in microreactor, synthesis of nanoparticles and their immobilization in microchannels. In 2011, he was awarded with graduate fellowship for PhD studies in South Korea. He completed his Ph.D in 2014 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kwangho Lee at Cancer and Infectious Disease Therapeutics Group, Drug Discovery Division, Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), Korea University of Science and Technology, South Korea. His research focus was designing and synthesis of pyrimidine based Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) inhibitors for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) treatment to overcome the limitations of Crizotinib (Xalkori®, Pfizer, an approved drug for NSCLC via ALK inhibition) which offered development of acquired drug resistance including EML4-ALK, L1196M, F1174L, R1275Q and G1269S. Furthermore, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Jongkook Lee at the College of Pharmacy, Kangwon National University (KNU), South Korea, he also developed new methodology for the synthesis of 2,6-disubstituted tetrahydropyran via intramolecular amide enolate alkylation (IAEA) for stereoselective total synthesis of a cyclohexanoids. He further co-developed first total synthesis of Xestodecalactone B & C and (-)-11α-hydroxycurvularin from commercially available material through remote stereo inductive Intramolecular Nitrile Oxide Cycloaddition (INOC) methodology. He has three international patents in his credit, few book chapters, and has published more than 44 research articles in reputed international journals. He has presented his research in several national and international meetings and conferences.
