Prof. Morgan Dundu serves as a Full Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering Science. From 2015 to 2017, he served as Vice-Dean: Teaching, Learning and Operations in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, at the University of Johannesburg. In this position, he represented the Faculty on the Senate Teaching and Learning Committee (STLC), provided leadership to the Technology Programme and Engineering Science Programme Committees, played a leading role in all teaching and learning activities including the UG Experience (First Year Experience and Senior Students Experience), managed success rates, provided oversight Faculty practices w.r.t. work-integrated learning (WIL), inbound/outbound UG programs, bursary initiatives, community service, entrepreneurial culture e.t.c, oversaw all quality matters of teaching and learning, managed and nurtured relationships with various accreditation agencies, incl. ECSA, coordinated the development and alignment of programmes, managed and forecast enrolment figures, incl. international enrolment parameters and strategies (recruitment and retention). Prior to that he served as the Head of School of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment, in the same Faculty. His duties included industry liaison (strategic level) and strategic partnerships, development of MoA’s with external organisations, strategic planning and staff recruitment and development, management of research and industry programmes (agenda, priorities and resourcing) student enrolment planning, processes and systems, resource balancing and coordination of departments, marketing, public relations and student recruitment, convener of mock accreditation exercises before proper accreditation process and alignment to UJ and FEBE strategy and financial management and budgeting.
Prof. Morgan Dundu holds a Bachelors’ degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe, a GDE, an MSc and a PhD degree in Structural Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. During his 19 year academic career he has taught Structural Engineering modules at the National University of Science & Technology, from 1997 to 1999, University of the Witwatersrand from 2001 to 2003, and at the University of Johannesburg from 2004 to the present. He is member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, editorial board member of the Journal of Steel Construction – Design and Research, European Convention of Constructional Steelwork, member of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering, member of the Concrete Society of Southern Africa, member of the Standards Association of South Africa and member of the South African Society of Engineering Education. He is a recipient of several awards, and these include two Wits Post-Graduate Merit Awards, patent (SA patent 2005/06651) for developing cold-formed steel portal-framed structures and a Patent Incentive Award by the National Research Foundation.
Professor Morgan Dundu is an NRF-rated established researcher in Structural Engineering. His research interests are in the behaviour of cold-formed steel and composite structures, and reliability of steel structures. In trying to understand the fundamental behaviour of these structures, he employs a combination of full-scale testing and numerical modelling. Evidence of his extensive research is contained in about 40 refereed journals and about 60 refereed conference papers. Most of the refereed journal papers are single authored, and are published in top international journals. Professor Morgan Dundu was invited by UNESCO to present a paper on Sustainable of Cities Post 2015 at the Asia-African Experts Consultation on Sustainability Science for Africa’s Economic, Social and Technological Insurgence Summit, from 4 – 5 March, 2015, in Harare, Zimbabwe. Following this presentation, Prof Morgan Dundu, was asked to lead research into Sustainable of Cities. He co-edited the Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Construction Materials and Structures, held from 24-26 November 2014, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and published by IOS Press. The conference provided a broad scientific and engineering treatment of construction materials comprising cement, concrete, steel, bitumen, timber, masonry and polymers. Previously, he edited the entire book “A Concise comparison of Limit State Structural Steel Design to SABS 0162 and Eurocode”, published by CSIR, and Chapters 4-7, 9 and 12 of the book “Design of Structural Steelwork in Southern Africa to SANS 10162” published by the same institution.
In the Department of Civil Engineering Science, Professor Morgan Dundu coordinated the development of an MEng in Structural Engineering. Before undertaking an academic career, Prof Morgan Dundu worked as a Civil Engineer in Zimbabwe, from 1991 to 1994. In this position, he participated in the design and construction of dams, multi-storey structures, water reservoirs, water and sewer reticulation systems.
