Bio
Teresa Montaruli is Full Professor at the University of Geneva since October 2011. Previously, she was firstly tenured assistant Prof. at the University of Bari in 2004 and then at the University of Wisconsin-Madison she was hired as Assistant Professor and Tenured as Associate professor in 2007. She started on neutrino oscillation physics with the MACRO experiment where she substantially contributed to the discovery of neutrino oscillations in atmospheric neutrinos, earning the Duggal Award. She then made the first simulation of the precursor of the Jem-EUSO satellite and coordinated the Astrophysics working group of the ANTARES neutrino telescope for 8 years producing the physics Monte Carlo of the experiment. She moved to the USA and took responsibility of the data analysis of IceCube looking for cosmic sources of neutrinos and was in first line on the first discovery of a blazar flare seen in neutrinos and gamma-rays and on the recent discovery of NGC 1068 by IceCube neutrino telescope. She was one of the promoters of the HAWC gamma-ray extensive air shower experiment responsible of the digital trigger and of the set up for photomultiplier qualification. She became American Fellow and she was in the Cosmology and Astroparticle panel of the Decadal Survey 2010 of the American National Academy. She moved to Geneva and opened a line of research on neutrinos and gamma-rays, both with the accent on advanced data analyses methods based on refined statistical methods and machine learning and on photosensing. She is the national coordinator of the CTAO project in Switzerland, one of the large research infrastructure projects directly financed by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation. She has been one of the coordinators of SENSE FET-OPEN EXCHANGE program on the definition of the Roadmap for low level of light sensing and she is one of the conceivers of an INFRA-TECH project named M2TECH on cooperation of CTAO and Einstein Telescope with industry. She is an expert on silicon photomultipliers, and she built a telescope with a fully digital camera equipped with silicon photosensors. From this experience she is now developing large size telescope cameras of 2 m diameter focusing within a FLARE project of SNF of which she is the PI, with Prof. Edoardo Charbon (EPFL) and Prof. Adrian Biland (ETHZ). The project is delivering a low-power consuming shaping amplifier ASIC and a GHz FADC ASIC. In addition, a CMOS based digital photon counting sensor is being designed and will be soon tested. She started during a sabbatical year at the Gran Sasso Science Institute working in a project with TAS-I, GSSI and INFN where she is responsible of the telescope TERZINA for the first detection from space produced by atmospheric showers. This is the future of ultra-high energy cosmic ray detection and could become a relevant player in multi-messenger astrophysics, while performing studies on silicon sensor radiation hardness.
She has been the Chair of the Astroparticle Physics European Consortium of funding agencies in 2019-20. I am the vice-President of the Swiss Physics Society from 2022 and will be the President from Sept. 2023.
