Monsur Islam is a scientist at the IMDEA Materials Institute at Getafe, Madrid, Spain.
Monsur received his B.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, India (2009-2013). After graduating from IIEST, he worked as a Research Assistant at the Center for Nanoscience at IIT Kanpur under the supervision of Prof. Ashutosh Sharma.
In 2014, Monsur commenced his doctoral journey at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Clemson University, United States, under the mentorship of Prof. Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte. His doctoral research focused on the microfabrication of carbon microelectrodes for healthcare diagnostics and advanced manufacturing of 3D porous carbonaceous materials. Clemson University acknowledged his outstanding research contributions with prestigious awards, including the Hitachi High Technologies Electron Microscopy Fellowship, Doctoral Scholastic Award, and Eastman Chemical Award. He successfully obtained his Ph.D. from Clemson in 2018.
Upon completion of his Ph.D., Monsur joined the Institute of Microstructure Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany as a scientist. He headed the research curriculum on micro/nanomanufacturing of carbon materials for biomedical and biotechnological applications at KIT. Additionally, he delved into the emerging domain of engineered living materials. In 2022, Monsur was selected among the top 20 young scientists in Germany for submitting a proposal on Engineered Living Materials to the German Research Council. His proposal was further granted funding by the German Research Council.
In 2023, Monsur achieved the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship, propelling him into his current position as a scientist at IMDEA Materials. His present research revolves around additive micro/nanomanufacturing of carbon materials for cellular interactions.
