个人简介
I and my students in the Child Language Ability Laboratory study narration. Narration is the language of storytelling. We are in search of culturally-fair measures of narration to identify linguistic intelligence no matter what dialect of American English a child speaks. To this end, we are examining how adults (teachers, parents) assess narration of Black elementary students who are speakers of African American English, Mainstream American English, or both dialects (bidialectal speakers). We are also exploring social and cognitive factors that affect children's narration such as social capital and theory of mind, respectively. The research methods we employ in the Child Language Ability Laboratory include group studies, norm-referenced testing, language sampling, experimental tasks, and qualitative interviews.
