Bio
Dr Hussein holds two PhD degrees, the first PhD in mechanical engineering was obtained from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UTN) jointly with the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). His first PhD thesis received a Dean's Award for Research Higher Degree Excellence Award (Outstanding Doctoral Research). His second PhD thesis in chemical and renewable energy engineering was obtained from Curtin University of Australia. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree (1st Class Hons.) and Master’s degree (1st Class Hons.) from Baghdad University of Iraq.
Dr Hussein has over 20 years’ experience in teaching, learning, research, and industry consulting work. Prior to his current position at ECU, he had held various academic and research positions at various renowned national and international universities such as Curtin University (Australia), Edith Cowan University (Australia), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia), University of Texas as San Antonio (USA), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Malaysia), Polytechnic Duhok University (Iraq), and Baghdad University (Iraq).
His research interests and experience are on a wide range of inter-disciplinary areas in renewable energy technologies, integrated renewable energy systems for Hydrogen production, phase change materials for energy storage; nanotechnology; Thermofluids of various energy systems; Numerical simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD); Miniature instrumentation development and testing; and High-speed fluid flow using Hypersonic Facilities for aerodynamics studies. He has published more than 190 refereed papers in prestigious peer-reviewed international journals with high impact factors. His h-index is (58) with total number of citations of 12750 according to Google Scholar (Dec 2022).
Dr Hussein has been a regular scientific reviewer for more than 95 international refereed journals published by various international and renowned publishers. He has also been a regular scientific reviewer/committee member/session chair for the various international conferences and many international research grants/proposals and textbooks/MSc and PhD theses. He has been the principal supervisor and associate supervisor of many successful high degree research students (10 PhD and 38 M.Eng) in the area of renewable energy and fuels, mechanical engineering, and advanced heat and mass transfer and nanotechnology applications since late 2009. He has also contributed to the supervision of numerous more, including students based at other local and international universities.
Dr Hussein has taught a wide range of diverse units in Mechanical/Chemical/Energy Engineering programs at various reputable local and international universities in Australia, USA, Malaysia and the Middle East for both undergraduate and postgraduate students such as: Heat and Mass Transfer, Mechanical Science, Renewable Energy Conversion 2, Thermodynamics, Process Engineering Fundamentals, Process Design, Chemical Thermodynamics, Hydrostatics. Other teaching experience include Advanced Chemical Thermodynamics, Flow Assurance, Wastewater Treatment, Process Plant Engineering, Process Principles, Chemical Engineering Fundamentals, Advanced Fluid Mechanics, Advanced Heat Transfer, Thermofluids Instrumentations and Diagnostics, Thermal Systems Design and Optimisation, Compressible Fluid Flow, Introduction to Energy Engineering, Mechanics of Materials, Statics and Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Turbomachinery, Environmental Engineering Fundamentals, Hydraulics Engineering, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Power Plants, Internal Combustion Engines.
He is internationally known by being an Associate Editor, an International Advisory Board and Editorial Board member of many reputed international journals such as Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology Journal, International Journal of Hydromechatronics, Heliyon, the Journal of Thermal Engineering, Energies, Processes, Molecules, and Thermal Science. Dr. Hussein has been awarded many international and national research awards from his current and previous employers due to his significant contribution in research impact. Most recently, he has been listed in Top 28 Best Australian Scientists in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 2023 (Research.com)
