个人简介
My full name is Modesto Antonio Rojas Villa. I was born in Maracaibo Venezuela in 1959 after finished high school in the Institute Arquideocesano San Francisco I started in the medical college of Zulia, Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 1985 I graduated as general physician. In 2003, I came to the USA where I started my carrier as a researcher at Medical College of Georgia in the Department of Physiology as a Post-doc fellow later I moved to Vascular Biology Center where I still work as Assistant Research Scientist. I have more than 18 years of experience as a researcher in the field of ischemic retinopathies. Currently, I have 24 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals listed in PubMed and 27 abstracts. My research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of retinal neovascularization and retinal damage during ischemic retinopathy using an mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) and a model of STZ-induced diabetes. Both model are the most widely used method to study retinal neovascularization and retinal injury during diabetes. My focus is on the role of inflammatory cytokines and growth factors in retinal neovascularization and the effect of oxidative stress on retinal tissue. Recently I have shown that trigger receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM-1) is expressed in oxygen-induced retinopathy where it acts as amplifier of the inflammation signaling pathway. TREM-1 is regulated by hypoxia, sepsis and elevated levels of plasma LDLc. It induces the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and the expression of the pro-angiogenic factor macrophages colony stimulating factor MCSF. TREM-1 inhibition prevents retinal oxygen-induced neovascularization. In my preliminary results Acyl coenzyme A: cholesterol transferase1 (ACAT1), shows closed interaction with TREM-1 and low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) during hypoxia. I have trained students and postdoctoral in the design and execution of animal models to evaluate retinal vascular permeability, inflammation, and neovascularization. I have a proven track record of research projects and productivity in an area of high clinical relevance that is summarized in the publications shown below
