Mitchell R. Anstey received the B.S. degree in chemistry from the
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA, in 2004 and the Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the University of
California Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, USA, in 2009, studying fundamental aspects of catalytic and stoichiometric
metal-mediated carbon–hydrogen bond activation processes.
He is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Livermore, CA, USA. His work on
redox flow batteries has followed his interests in organometallic and inorganic chemistry where the synthesis of
redox-active molecular species can uncover promising new technologies. He currently leads an interdisciplinary team of
chemists, electrochemists, mechanical and chemical engineers, and materials scientists in the development of nonaqueous
redox flow batteries. Specifically, the area of redox noninnocence has been the focus of his team, but SNL has a strong
effort in the area of new materials development for redox flow batteries including efforts on polyoxometalates and
metal-containing ionic liquids (MetILs). Additional areas of expertise and scientific interest include luminescence,
radiation detection, main group chemistry, and molecular magnetism.
