Bio
My main research interest is Ecology, i.e., the interactions among organisms and their environment. Currently, I am focusing my research on microbial communities, as unicellular microbes account for a large and poorly understood fraction of Earth’s biodiversity and biomass and have a key role in Earth’s ecosystems. Concretely, I analyse microbial diversity and function in the oceans as well as the factors controlling them. Among the factors, I pay special attention to the distinct planktonic structures that can harbour microorganisms, e.g., marine particles and zooplankton. During my PhD I focused on the study of the spatial and temporal dynamics of microbial diversity associated with marine particles of different sizes, and in different oceanographic regions. Now, as a post-doctoral researcher, I am focusing on Antarctic ecosystems where I study the zooplankton microbiome and its effects on the biogeochemical cycles of the Southern Ocean. For this purpose, I use standard oceanographic and microbiological procedures, as well as novel molecular and bioinformatic techniques.
