Mireia López Bertran is lecturer (profesor ayudante doctor) at Departament of Art History
of the Universitat de Valencia since October 2016. She was graduated in Humanities by
the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 2000 and received her PhD degree in History from the
Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain) in 2007. She specialises in the Phoenician-Punic
archaeology, with research interests in iconography, ancient Mediterranean art, embodiment,
rituals and gender. Between 2010-2012, she was postdoctoral researcher of the Spanish
Ministry of Education and Culture-FECYT and she worked as an Honorary Research Fellow
at the Archaeology Unit of the University of Glasgow. She undertook a project called “ Craft,
rituals and gender in the Punic Mediterranean: a comparative analysis between Eivissa
and Sardinia” and the results has been published in international peer-reviewed journals
such a Cambridge Archaeological Journal, Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology or World
Archaeology. She was appointed Beatriu de Pinós/Marie Curie Postdoctoral fellow at the
Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona between 2014 and 2016 and she undertook a project
entitled “ Change and continuity in the cemeteries of the Phoenician and Punic world:
funerary rituals and conceptions of the body”.
She has presented her research in several international Congresses: Association for Art
History, Association for Coroplastic Studies, TAG (Theoretical Archaeological Group
Conference), WAC (World Archaeology Congress), EAA (European Archaeologist
Association), AIAC (International Congress of Classical Archaeology) or CIEFP (Congreso
Internacional de Estudios Fenicios y Púnicos). She has also joined specialised international
Workshops on the main lines of her research, mainly ancient iconography, coroplastic art,
gender, bodies, rituals and music. She has also been awarded with funds from the DAAD
(German Academic Exchange Service) to be visiting scholar at the Eberhard-Karl Universität
Tübingen in 2006, 2010 and 2014. She has joined the Joukowsky Institute of Archaeology and
the Ancient Wolrd (Brown University) as visiting scholar in April-May 2015.
She has been involved in several national and international I+D+ i projects that allowed her to
be involved in excavations of Phoenician and Punic main sites such the cemetery of Tyre Al-
Bass (Lebanon) and the colonies of Lixus (Larache, Morocco), Cerro del Villar (Málaga, Spain)
and Sulky (St. Antioco, Sardinia, Italy). Recently, she has begun a second line of investigation
that concerns Iberian art.
