Bio
Dr. Miguel Saraiva (34 year old) has a doctoral degree on Territorial and Environmental Planning, and works as a Researcher and Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto – Department of Geography. A member of the scientific committee of CEGOT (Centre of Studies on Geography and Spatial Planning), he is an expert in modelling the relationships between morphology/design (using GIS tools), and specific types of land-use and behaviour patterns, which he has applied in various dimensions of urban, regional, transport and environmental planning. Particularly, he made significant advances in researching geographical and design solutions to urban safety and quality of life, striving towards territorial and social cohesion. He is the Coordinator of the project CANVAS - Towards Safer and Attractive Cities: Crime and Violence Prevention through Smart Planning and Artistic Resistance, funded by COMPETE2020 (2018-21, €240.000), and co-national coordinator of project Erasmus+ SWaPOL – Social Work and Policing: Vocational Training in Public Order Management (2018-20, €207.000), led by the European Centre for Social Welfare. Furthermore, he represented Portugal in COST Action Crime Prevention through Urban Design and Planning (2012-2016), and is currently team member of important projects at various planning levels; national (the revision of Portugal’s National Plan for Territorial Planning Policies, PNPOT), metropolitan (project AMP-SIG), municipal (the revision of Porto’s Masterplan, PDM), and European (project CiTown (2019) headed by the European Commission - Joint Research Centre). He has published 8 papers in WoS/Scopus-indexed Journals, 3 books/chapters, 12 papers at conference proceedings and 20 reports; and has spoken in over thirty scientific meetings and supervised 2 completed Master Thesis.
