Son of Carlos Manuel Couceiro Neto de Sousa e Maria Manuela Lopes Tavares Couceiro de Sousa, was born in Coimbra on Sunday, October 20, 1968, at 6:oo pm.
Started the preschool in 1971 in Coimbra at Externato João XXIII, moving to Leiria in 1974 completing the first year of primary 1st school cycle in 1975 at Colégio Castelinho, In 1975 returned to Coimbra, completing the primary 1st school cycle in 1978 at Escola Básica Norton de Matos. In 1978 moved to Viseu concluding the first year of the primary 2nd school cycle in 1979 at Escola Básica Grão Vasco, returning then to Coimbra, where finished the second year of the primary 2nd school cycle in 1980 at the Escola Básica Eugénio de Castro. In 1980 started the primary 3rd school cycle at Escola Secundária Avelar Brotero, having finished in 1983. In 1983 started the secondary school in Coimbra at Escola Secundária Avelar Brotero, moving in 1986 to Colégio São Teotónio where he finished the secondary school in 1987.
In 1987 started the BSc in Physics Engineering (Instrumentation) at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, concluding in 1993, with the thesis: “Windows End-User Software for a Photodiode Array Fluorophotometer”. In 1994 started his MSc in Biomedical Engineering (Biomedical Instrumentation) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, concludig in 1998 with the thesis: "Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting Techniques in Ocular Fluorometry - Simulation and Evaluation". In 2008 started his PhD in Physics (Technological Physics) at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, concluding in 2014 with the thesis: "Simulation Study of a Wide-Axial Field of View Positron Emission Tomography System Based on Resistive Plate Chamber Detectors".
Started the teaching career as a High School Substitution Teacher in the Fernando Namora High School in Condeixa-a-Nova (1005-1996), where was also the Head of the Informatics Class Room.
In 1996 started to lecture (as MSc student) Biophysics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, being then hired as a Teaching Monitor of Biophysics and Biomathematics (1996-1997). Was also a Trainee Teaching Assistant (1997-1998), and a Teaching Assistant (1998-2003). Made an internship in Medical Physics (Radiotherapy) at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Coimbra (1996-1998), and was a Consultant of Medical Physics (Radiotherapy) in the Hospitals of the University of Coimbra (1998-2000). Was member of the Executive Council of the Institute for Biomedical Research on Light and Image (2001-2003) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra.
In 2003 leaved the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra to join the Coimbra Institute of Engineering of the Polytechnic of Coimbra, where was a Teaching Assistant until 2014, being since then an Assistant Teacher. In the Polytechnic of Coimbra, was President of the Scientific Commission of Physics Scientific Area and member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Coimbra Institute of Engineering (2016-2020). Is member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Applied Research (since 2014), being also the Head of the High Performance Computing Laboratory of the Coimbra Institute of Engineering/Institute of Applied Research of the Polytechnic of Coimbra (since 2014). Is also a member of the Course Commission of the BSc in Biomedical Engineering – Bioelectronics (since 2016), and of the Coordinating Commission of the MSc in Biomedical Instrumentation (since 2014).
He is a researcher of the Institute of Applied Research of the Polytechnic of Coimbra (since 2014), of the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (since 2004), being also member of Scientific Council since 2014, and was a researcher of the Institute for Biomedical Research on Light and Image of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (1998-2003), and of the Electronic and Instrumentation Group of the Physics Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (1992-1997).
Received three grants: PhD grants SFRH/PROTEC/49822/2009 and SFRH/BD/42217/2007 from the Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal), and MSc grant PRAXIS XXI/BM/739/94 from the former National Board of Scientific Research (Portugal).
Has been member of the research team of 8 funded projects.
His current research interests are: Positron Emission Tomography with Resistive Plate Chambers, Medical Physics, Computational Physics, and Biomedical Engineering.
