Bio
I am interested in the molecular basis of learning, memory and neuronal diseases. My current research is focused on understanding how the structural and molecular remodeling of synapses determine the rules of neuronal plasticity. I use advanced optical technologies, such as 2-photon imaging, optogenetics and photopharmacology to study the molecular mechanisms underlying plasticity (long-term potentiation and depression), their interaction with brain waves, and how these mechanisms are impaired in autism spectrum disorders and epilepsy.
I graduated in Biochemistry and received my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) with a thesis on the use of stem cells for the treatment of Huntington’s disease. In 2005 I moved to the National Institute for Basic Biology (NIBB, Okazaki, Japan) to study the neuronal circuits of multisensory integration. I then joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, 2016) to investigate the molecular mechanisms of learning and memory using new optical technologies. In 2012 I was appointed as Research Scientist at MIT to study how synaptic plasticity is impaired in autism spectrum disorders. I moved to the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC, Barcelona) in 2015, where I used new photopharmacological tools to manipulate synaptic plasticity and to develop therapeutic brain mapping techniques. I joined the Cortical Networks Lab at the Biomedical Research Institute Agustí Pi i sunyer (IDIBAPS, Barcelona) in 2018.
Since 2020, I am Assistant Professor at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC-Barcelona), Group Leader of the Laboratory of Synaptic Plasticity, and associated researcher at the Institute of Neurosciences (INc) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
