Broadly speaking, my research interests involve software systems and networking. My most recent work explores how web browsers can leverage JavaScript in interesting ways. For example, in the Mugshot project, we show how to capture execution traces for buggy web applications in the wild; later, we can use these traces to replay buggy executions on a developer machine. The logging and replay code is written in standard JavaScript, so all of this works in unmodified browsers!
I'm generally interested in distributed systems which can introspect the behavior of their constituent hosts and adapt themselves to improve performance, security, or manageability. In the past, I've studied how to predict host availability in distributed systems, and how to make overlay routing robust to malicious forwarding peers. I've applied machine learning techniques to diagnose faults in complex Windows applications. I've also dabbled in creating analytic models for the spread of computer viruses.
