Bio
Michele Thums is an Australian marine ecologist using satellite telemetry to study movement behaviour and conservation of a range of marine megafauna (whales, sharks, seals and turtles). She is Senior Research Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Perth and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia.
Her research quantifies distribution and important areas for these species, foraging behaviour and the exposure to and impacts of anthropogenic activities. Her research outputs inform conservation and management of threatened marine megafauna species such as pygmy blue whales.
She gained a PhD in marine ecology in 2009 under the supervision of Prof. Mark Hindell at the University of Tasmania studying the foraging strategies of southern elephant seals. Between 2011 and 2013 Dr Thums did postdoctoral research on the diving behaviour of whale sharks and dispersal of marine turtle hatchlings in relation to light pollution with Dr mark Meekan (AIMS) and Chari Pattiaratchi (UWA) after which she was employed as a Research Scientist at AIMS.
