My research focuses on sustainable use of the marine environment in relation to fisheries and aquaculture. My research group currently provides science and advice to the Isle of Man Government and I have a team of two scientists based permanently within the Government for this purpose. We achieve our research through extensive collaboration with the fishing industry by engaging fishermen in data collection. We are currently moving towards a position where we could implement ecosystem based management of scallop fisheries in the Isle of Man and also in Wales. Our research has underpinned the Marine Stewardship Council accreditation of the queen scallop fishery in the Isle of Man and of the blue mussel fishery in Wales. At an international level my research is recognised as world leading in the area of understanding how fishing interacts with seabed systems. This research is used as evidence in 27 MSC assessments of trawl/dredge fisheries that are currently certified by the MSC.
