Bio
I obtained a BSc in Psychology from the University of Aberdeen (2003), and a PhD in Neuropsychology from the University of Edinburgh (2007). Between 2007 and 2013 I was a post-doctoral research fellow within the Human Cognitive Neuroscience unit of the University of Edinburgh, supported by personal research fellowships from Alzheimer's Research UK (2007-2010) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Lloyds Foundation for Scotland (2010-2013). In October 2013 I was appointed as an Assistant Professor and Research Leader at Heriot-Watt University under the the ‘Global Platform for Research Leaders’ strategic plan. I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016.
In 2016 I was awarded the Elizabeth Warrington Prize from the British Neuropsychological Society for distinguished research in neuropsychology.
I lead the Memory Lab at Heriot-Watt University. My research explores forgetting and memory consolidation (strengthening) in healthy people as well as in patients with amnesia, including amnestic MCI, Alzheimer's Disease, focal brain injury and temporal lobe epilepsy.
I am particularly interested in the impact that behavioural/cognitive state has on the consolidation of new memories. Our research indicates that new memories are consolidated better when people rest wakefully immediately after new learning (minimal sensory input) than when they then attend to other information (high sensory input). In several studies, we have discovered that wakeful resting can substantially boost memory in many patients with amnesia, including amnestic MCI and mild Alzheimer’s Disease. This suggests that (i) amnesia is associated, at least partly, with excessive memory interference, and thus (ii) that there may be an opportunity for interventions that boost memory consolidation by minimising such interference (see my lab page, publications, Research Gate page and lab twitter for further details and news).
I collaborate widely with fellow psychologists and neuropsychologists as well as with neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, animal neurophysiologists, and neuroimagers.
