Dr. Velec's primary research focus is on the development of high-precision, adaptive radiation therapy techniques through the use MR image-guidance, deformable image registration and dose accumulation. These approaches enable the patient’s radiation plans to be tailored to how they individually respond over the course of treatment. This also provides a clearer understanding of clinical dose-response relationships, for example, which patients’ tumours respond to treatment and where there is a greater risk of developing treatment-related side effects.

Another stream of research is developing models of care for Radiation Therapists who perform supportive care and technical procedures for patients receiving radiation therapy. The new models that are being tested in the clinic aim to facilitate adaptive techniques while simultaneously streamlining the patient experience.
