Bio
Michael Muma (Member, IEEE) received the Dipl.-Ing and Dr.-Ing. (summa cum laude) degrees in electrical engineering and information technology from Technische Universität Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Germany, in 2009 and 2014, respectively. He is currently an Independent Junior Research Group Leader (Athene Young Investigator) with TU Darmstadt, and a Scientist with the interdisciplinary and multi-site research cooperation emergenCITY. He is devoted to developing new data science approaches, methods, theory and tools for robust signal processing and statistical learning with applications in biomedicine, radar, and sensor networks. For his contributions to robust signal processing and statistical learning, he was awarded the prestigious EURASIP Early Career Award (2021) that is awarded to an outstanding Researcher at an early or mid-stage of their career whose current work shows not only significant scientific achievements but also high potential to advance scientific knowledge through novel, timely and significant endeavors. He was a coauthor of the 2020 IEEE Radar Conference Student Contest Best Paper Award. Since 2019, he has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and Elected Member of EURASIP Technical Area Committee on Theoretical and Methodological Trends in Signal Processing (TMTSP). Together with his coauthors, he was awarded the 2017 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award for the paper entitled Robust Estimation in Signal Processing: A Tutorial-Style Treatment of Fundamental Concepts. In 2017, he was also the recipient of the Athene Young Investigator Award for Exceptionally Qualified Early Career Researchers, and in 2015, he was the Supervisor of the Technische Universität Darmstadt student team who won the international IEEE Signal Processing Cup. The competition topic was Heart Rate Monitoring During Physical Exercise Using Wrist-Type Photoplethysmographic (PPG) Signals. In 2016, he co-organized the 2016 Joint IEEE SPS and EURASIP Summer School on Robust Signal Processing. This year he is co-organizing the 3rd Statistical Learning for Signal and Image Processing (SLSIP) Workshop.
