Dr. Michael E. Locasto is a Senior Computer Scientist in the Infrastructure Security Group at SRI International. He also holds an appointment as an Assistant Professor (Associate with tenure as of July 2016) in the Computer Science Department at the University of Calgary. He seeks to understand why it seems difficult to build secure, trustworthy systems and how we can get better at it. He was previously a Visiting Professor in Computer Science (and the Center for Secure Information Systems) at George Mason University, where he was an I3P (Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection) Fellow during the 2008-2009 academic year. From January to August 2008, he was a Fellow at the Institute for Security, Technology, and Society (ISTS) at Dartmouth College. He graduated magna cum laude from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) with a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science. Dr. Locasto also holds an M.Sc., M.Phil., and PhD (all in Computer Science) from Columbia University, where he also served as a Department Preceptor (teaching two full-time undergraduate courses during the 2005-2006 academic year). He serves as the USENIX campus liason for U of C. His research explores methods for applying machine intelligence to a variety of security mechanisms, especially ways to make intrusion defense systems automatic, correct, and adaptive. His current work examines novel methods for encoding, analyzing, monitoring, and negotiating trustworthy execution. Dr. Locasto has authored or co-authored over 70 conference, workshop, and journal publications in the field of computer security and intrusion detection. Dr. Locasto has served on a number of conference organizing and program committees, including as General Chair for IEEE Security and Privacy 2016. He is a co-inventor on twelve patents dealing with intrusion detection and computer security.
