As an attending surgeon at Children's Hospital for more than 15 years, Dr. Nance brings his clinical expertise in pediatric trauma to CHOP’s busy level 1 trauma center in the heart of Philadelphia. He has conducted extensive research in the field of pediatric trauma, specifically examining firearms injury in children, solid organ injuries and traumatic brain injury. His research has also focused on broader issues related to pediatric trauma such as access to trauma care and injury prevention.
While his research interests have been largely concentrated in the area of pediatric trauma, Dr. Nance maintains interest in all aspects of the care of the newborn or child with surgical problems including congenital anomalies, oncology and gastrointestinal disorders.
Dr. Nance earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Rhodes College, Memphis, TN, his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA, and completed his surgical residency at The University of Pennsylvania. He completed fellowships in pediatric surgery research and surgical critical care at The University of Pennsylvania.
In 1997, Dr. Nance was selected as the Louise Schnaufer Senior Fellow in Pediatric Surgery and Chief Resident at CHOP.
Dr. Nance has published extensively in scientific journals and books, and presents regularly about childhood trauma, brain injuries and violence. He has served as a member of the editorial board, as a guest editor and as a reviewer for more than a dozen medical journals. Dr. Nance has been recognized as one of the top pediatric trauma surgeons by Philadelphia Magazine.
