Bio
Melaku Getachew was born on 24 May 1975, in Ethiopia. His father is a farmer and his mother is a housewife, neither of whom have no formal schooling but who gave Melaku all the best opportunities to learn in formal schools. He attended Grades one to six at Alley Elementary School, Grades Seven and Eight at Degolo Junior Secondary School, and Grades Nine to Eleven at Arbegnoch Senior Secondary School, Merhabete, Alemketema, and Grade twelve at Haik Senior secondary School at South Wollo Zone, Haik, and finally Joined Jimma University in 1995.
After graduating from Jimma institute of health sciences in sanitary science, Melaku Getachew has worked for more than 20 years since 1997 in different positions. He has worked as a Senior Environmental Health Expert at Artuma Jille Woreda, as head of Jille Timuga Health Office, Oromia Special Zone Health Department, and Oromia Special Zone Water Resources Development Department. After several years of service in different sectors of the Ethiopian Government, Melaku has taught at Wollo University as a lecturer and has served as Head of Educational Quality (College of Medicine and Health Sciences).
During his time in Artuma Jille Woreda, he has worked with World Vision Ethiopia, UNICEF-Ethiopia, World Health Organization (WHO), and other non-governmental organizations in various environmental activities, training of health workers, surveillance, water source protection, and field data collection. As head of the woreda health office, he also spent two years providing leading and management roles in Jille Timuga Woreda. He has prepared business plans and proposals to the collaborating organizations to ask for the construction of health centers for the community and several health centers and health posts have been constructed by his unreserved effort (for example, Senbete health center in Jille Timuga Woreda).
He has played a similar leading and managing roles during his service as zonal health department and water resources development department head from 2006 through 2012. In this position, Melaku provided technical support, particularly in the control of the cholera epidemic, and environmental assistance, developed training programs, conducted surveillances, and developed written programs on health, water supply, and irrigation development in the zone. Melaku is a Certified Environmentalist and holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Health and MSc in Environmental Science and Technology Specialty in Technology from Jimma University. He also serves as a member of the Ethiopian Public Health Association, Environmental Health Professional Association, and International Society of Limnology. Recently, Melaku is working as a lecturer at Wollo University in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences in the Environmental Health Department. He teaches in different departments in the college. He is now the father of three sons and three daughters.
