个人简介
I was appointed as the Associate Dean of Research in the School of Medical and Health Sciences in 2016. My teaching and research interests have focused on increasing our understanding of developmental genes and their involvement in cell proliferation, specification and migration. I have studied their expression and regulatory functions in embryogenesis and in adults from several different phyla and have utilised mutant mouse models to aid understanding. In particular my research has centred on delineation of the importance of developmental genes in specification of melanoblasts, in malignant melanoma cells and in neurogenesis. Melanoma is a central research focus. I have received funding from the NHMRC, ARC, Rotary WA, Cancer Council of WA, CaPCREU, Lotterywest and the OLT to support my research.
Forming a teaching and learning and research nexus has also been a focus of my career for many years. I have taught undergraduate students and supervised postgraduate students and coordinated units and courses as well as the Honours and Postgraduate courses.
My research team currently comprises 4 postdoctoral researchers, 4 research assistants, and 10 postgraduate students (6 PhDs, 2 MSc and 2 Hons). During my career I have supervised several postgraduate students to completion (13 PhDs, 8 MScs and 14 BSc Hons). Several PhD graduates have secured excellent postdoctoral positions in prestigious laboratories worldwide including Cambridge University UK, Kings College London UK, Columbia University NY USA, University of Pennsylvania USA, Curtin University and UWA.
I have published over 100 papers, and have been an invited speaker at several international conferences. I am a member of the scientific advisory board of the Cancer Council of WA and a member of the Board of Huntington’s WA. I was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health - Skin cancer in Australia in 2014.
I established the Edith Cowan University Melanoma Research Group in 2007 and the Huntington's disease research group in 2010. I have served on ALTC and NHMRC grant review panels for several years. I am the past West Australian state representative for the ANZ Society of Cell and Developmental Biology and have been/am an enthusiastic conference organising committee member for several conferences.
I promote science to the community, giving talks and demonstrations to adults and school students and community clubs. I also organise melanoma awareness talks for the general public and skin cancer screening programs for companies.
