Bio
Dr. Mahoney’s research brings together the fields of endocrinology, toxicology, and circadian biology. Her research is significant as it investigates how hormones or endocrine disrupting chemicals impact rhythms (sleep, entrainment) across the lifespan of females. She has over 15 years of expertise and publications characterizing the reciprocal interactions between the circadian time keeping system and female reproductive cyclicity (ovulation, mating behaviors, and hormone surges) in a variety of rodent species. She has expanded her research program to examine the relationship of hormones and endocrine disrupting chemicals on sleep in menopausal women. As an associate professor Dr. Mahoney has established an independent research program determining how daily rhythms are shaped by estrogen signaling pathways utilizing sophisticated genetic mouse models. Her work is the first to provide an in-depth characterization of the organizational effects of estradiol on the expression of biological rhythms.
