Bio
Dr. Hossain is a Chartered Professional Engineer and Fellow of Engineers Australia (FIEAst, CPEng, NER) with about 20 years of teaching, research, and consulting works experience in multiple areas of petroleum engineering with an emphasis on areas associated with Petroleum Well and Production Technology. He taught a wide range of upstream petroleum engineering courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and successfully directed and supervised many academic research projects at honors, masters, and Ph.D. levels for petroleum engineering students.
He is currently working as an Associate Professor and Petroleum Engineering Discipline Lead at Curtin University, where he has been actively involved in teaching, research, and consulting works; directing and supervising research students (honors, MS and Ph.D.); providing with many senior executive levels academic leadership and administrative supports for the WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering, and serving many committees in the faculty of Science and Engineering and University. He served as Head of Department (HoD) of Petroleum Engineering at Curtin for more than 2 years (2015-2017), and has been continuing as Petroleum Engineering Discipline Lead since January 2018. As a part of the role of HoD, he was proactively involved in managing more than more than 15 full-time faculty members (academic & research staff), and more than 20 sessional/adjunct academic staff; and providing supports in many strategic developments for the petroleum engineering discipline and the broader aspects of the school, faculty, and university. He worked in collaboration with the Pro-vice Chancellor (PVC), Dean of Engineering, Head of School (HoS), School Business Manager (SBM), School Technical Manager (STM), and the University’s Finance function in overseeing the responsible financial management of the department, including preparation of transparent budgets and allocation of resources; and fostering department’s teaching and research activities towards the strategic direction of the University, optimization of Petroleum Course Curriculum. He designed and developed a Professional Master of Engineering in Petroleum and Subsea Engineering, which will commence from semester 1, 2020. He has been very instrumental in running the Petroleum Engineering program in a sustainable manner. Prior to joining Curtin, he worked with the University of Adelaide and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, Reservoir Engineering Research Institute (RERI), Palo Alto, in the USA, King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. He also worked as a Reservoir Management Engineer in Saudi Aramco for a short period of time in a multidisciplinary gas field development project.
His professional career has been spanned in working on the state of the art of the Petroleum Engineering Science and Technology emphasizing on modeling for solving numerous complex problems, investigations, and evaluations of much upstream petroleum engineering operation related technical issues through teaching, research, and consulting activities. He has been involved with many academic researches and consulting projects. He directed and supervised/co-supervised much higher degree by research students, and authored/co-authored over 70 papers published in the international journals and conferences. He is on the Editorial board of ‘Energies’, Advisor of scientific journal Sci. He was also an editor of Special Issue, “Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation for the Exploitation of Unconventional Resources in Worldwide in Energies.
He has been serving: SPE, as a faculty advisor; and as a regular technical reviewer for many leading international journals. He is the founder of the SPE Curtin Student Chapter; and served as a technical committee member and technical session chair in SPE-APOGC 2014 and IPTC 2014-2020 conferences, and has been continually serving as a technical committee member for 2021 SPE IPTC.
Dr. Hossain served as Engineers Australia Accreditation Discipline Panel Expert, and as a part of this, he was actively engaged in reviewing and evaluating of the BEng Engineering course for one of the Australian Universities in 2018. He has also been serving as a discipline expert in the Engineers Australia Chartered Professional Engineering interview panel.
