个人简介
My name is Mamunur Rashid, I am a postdoc at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, NY, USA. My long-term career goal is to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie the most common neurodegenerative disorders, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by utilizing genetics and neuroimmunology. I am particularly interested in the innate immune cells such as microglia and how to modulate the phagocytic activities of these professional cells to clear the toxic material specifically from the AD brain. My research experience and academic training have provided me with an excellent background in different biological science areas including immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience. As a master’s student, I worked on vaccine immunology from a nutritional perspective under the supervision of Drs. SM Ahmad and Rubhana Raqib at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). As a Ph.D. student with Dr. Eric Olson, my research focused on the role of classical integrin-based focal adhesion proteins in the developing cerebral cortex. The role of these proteins was controversial, and my works showed that paxillin family focal adhesion protein is required for radial migration of cortical excitatory neurons, thus it required to maintain the proper pace of cortical development to neurodevelopment. While my Ph.D. study helped me to gather extensive knowledge in the field of neuroscience, however, there is a gap in my research to understand the neurodegenerative disease, as recent genetics shifted toward innate immune cells- connects neuroscience to immunology. Since I have not previously worked in the field of neuroimmunology, for my postdoctoral training, I will combine my previous immunology experience with neuroscience expertise to understand neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease from the perspective of innate immunity. And I think this combination is crucial currently as recent genetic studies identified immune cells in nearly all neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease. I am particularly interested in dissecting the role of SHIP1 in microglia and in AD how this single molecule connects all other known genetic risk factors of AD such as CD33 and TREM2. My postdoctoral supervisor Dr. Elizabeth Bradshaw is an internationally recognized leader in the neuroimmunology field and has an extensive record for training postdoctoral fellows. My overall career goal is to become a faculty member and run an independent laboratory in the field of Alzheimer’s disease.
