Bio
Mayra Donaji Barrera Machuca is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. She completed her PhD in Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University under the supervision of Prof. Wolfgang Stuerzlinger. Her dissertation focuses on understanding how people think when working inside a 3D virtual environment, with the goal of designing novel user interfaces for VR.
Dr. Barrera Machuca's dissertation investigated several aspects of sketching in VR and proposed new user interfaces to improve accuracy for this activity. She first studied how perceptual and cognitive limitations of humans affect their sketching behaviors in virtual environments. For this, she studied the effect of changing the viewpoint when sketching in 3D. Also, she investigated the effect of the depth perception issues in common stereo displays on pointing with a stylus in peripersonal space. Building on the knowledge acquired, she presented two user interfaces for sketching in VR that help users sketch more accurately. The first one is Multiplanes, which uses real-time beautification, drawing planes, and trigger points to facilitate the sketching process. The second one is called Smart3DGuides and provides guides inside the virtual world to help users identify the geometric relationships between their strokes and thus helps them sketch more accurately.
Dr. Barrera Machuca's work in the 3D sketching space has generated considerable interest in the community, and her work has been published at top conferences like ACM CHI, IEEE VR, and ACM UIST. More info on Dr. Barrera Machuca's work is available at http://mayradonaji.net
