Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. Mayberg received a BA in psychobiology from University of California, Los Angeles and an MD from University of Southern California. She is a Board Certified Neurologist, trained at the Neurological Institute of NY at Columbia University and a post-doctoral fellowship in Nuclear Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Inventors, has authored more than 200 publications, and participates in a wide variety of advisory and scientific activities across multiple fields in neuroscience. She has been recognized as one of Emory University’s “Game Changers” in recognition of her pioneering DBS research which has been heralded as a one of the first hypothesis-driven treatment strategies for a major mental illness.
The Mayberg Depression Biometrics Lab (DBL) takes a multidisciplinary neural systems approach to the study of major depression and its recovery. The DBL integrate multimodal neuroimaging strategies (PET, sMRI, fMRI, DTI, and EEG) and quantitative behavioral and psychophysiological metrics within experimental clinical trial protocols to define brain mechanisms mediating antidepressant treatments. The core mission is to develop imaging biomarkers and algorithms that will discriminate patient subgroups and optimize treatment selection in the management of individual patients across all stages of illness. The DBL also serves as base camp for ongoing testing of deep brain stimulation for treatment resistant depression, bringing together electro physiologists, engineers, imaging scientists and clinicians to refine, optimize and extend this approach for the treatment of depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders.
